City Electric Utility Tax

The City of Hampton, VA imposes a monthly utility tax on purchasers of local electric service. This tax is in addition to the consumption tax. It is levied on a "per meter" basis, on each purchase of electricity delivered to customers by a service provider. Service providers must charge this tax to and collect this tax from purchasers. It must be remitted to the City monthly, no later than the last day of the month following the month of collection.

The state and local rates are as follows:

  • Residential: $1.40 + $0.014953 per kWh; $3.00 maximum tax
  • Commercial: $2.29 + $0.013953 per each of first 2,703 kWhs plus $0.003321 thereafter; $80.00 maximum tax
  • Industrial and Other: $2.29 plus $0.015498 per each of first 2,433 kWhs plus $0.004835 thereafter; $80.00 maximum tax
