One March 13, 2005 the National League of Cities recognized the Hampton Citizens' Unity Commission through its 2005 City Cultural Diversity Awards Program. The commission was recognized for its Hampton Diversity College program which offers diversity education.
The Hampton Diversity College is a program of diversity education for citizens sponsored by the Hampton Citizens' Unity Commission. The college is comprised of two components: Workplace Diversity Sessions and Community Diversity Sessions.
This awards program recognizes the growing diversity in America's cities. The National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) believes that diversity should be reflected in the activities of America's cities and towns. As a result NBC-LEO established the City Cultural Diversity Awards as a means of demonstrating quality and innovation in relation to the many aspects of cultural diversity. NBC-LEO is one of several constituency groups of the National League of Cities aimed at supporting the varied needs of municipal officials.
