For adults with disabilities, there are ongoing therapeutic recreation opportunities. These individuals can participate in events with others while playing cards and board games, dancing, doing crafts, and much more.
Special Olympics
Hampton Therapeutic Recreation and Hampton Athletics Departmentpartners with Special Olympics Virginia each year to provide athletics programs that engage and empower individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through the power of sports, Special Olympics Athletes discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. Hampton (Area 30) is part of the Peninsula Region of Special Olympics Virginia.
Sports offered through Hampton Therapeutic Recreation include: - Swimming, Track & Field (spring) - Bowling (fall) - Basketball (winter)
Registration is required to participate in any Special Olympics sport. Registration forms can be found here or on the Special Olympics Virginia website. Forms must be completed and submitted prior to attending the first practice. Please send complete forms to therapeuticrec@hampton.gov.

COVID-19 Guidelines: The spring Track & Field program will be done in phases and conducted entirely outdoors. All participants will be asked a series of screening questions and temperature checks will be conducted. All athletes must have a medical form on file with Special Olympics or submit one prior to the first practice. All athletes must also complete a COVID-19 Waiver, which is included in the registration form.
