City manager Bunting receives leadership award from international management group: The award from ICMA, an international management organization for local governments, recognized "innovative and successful local government programs that have significantly affected an organization's culture or strategic direction." Hampton won top honors among cities with a population above 50,000.
City Manager Bunting named national innovator: Hampton City Manager Mary Bunting named a White House Local Innovation Champion of Change: Bunting was one of 13 municipal innovators from across the nation who committed themselves to creating a more open and innovative government through entrepreneurship. They were honored at the White House.
The Hampton/NASA Steam Plant won a 2012Federal Energy and Water Management Award, a highly competitive award for which federal agencies across the nation compete. Each year the U.S. Department of Energy sponsors the Federal Energy and Water Management Awards to honor individuals and organizations making significant contributions to the efficient use of energy and water resources.

Public Works receives the Dave Pearson Watershed Excellence Award, presented by the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association (VLWA) for the Buckroe Breakwater project. The Dave Pearson Award was established in 2009 to recognize Mr. Pearson's many years of dedication to VLWA, the annual water conference, and excellence in achieving improved water quality. Projects are judged by five criteria: importance to Virginia watersheds, project objectives, scientific approach and design, implementation and construction success, and public acceptance and support.
