The Hampton Clean City Commission’s Adopt-A-Spot program provides a flexible, meaningful opportunity for youth to participate in community environmental stewardship. While youth under age 18 require adult supervision while participating in the program, they are free to develop leadership and planning skills by arranging cleanup schedules, requesting and returning cleanup equipment, reporting results, and receiving recognition for their efforts.
The Community Cleanup program selects one spot each month to clean up, and most sites are youth friendly. The current Community Cleanup calendar is here.
Hampton public and private schools are encouraged to participate in the Plastic Film Recycling Challenge sponsored annually by Trex Company, Inc. Schools collect plastic film (bags and wrappers), submit their results to Trex, and have the opportunity to win a plastic bench.
askHRgreen.org offers environmental education mini-grants of up to $500 for classrooms and youth organizations. The mini-grants are intended to provide funding for environmentally-themed projects and may be used to fund a portion of or an entire project.
