The Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center, at 231 Lincoln St., broke ground on Feb. 9, 2021, and opened on Sept. 17, 2022.

The new 12,500-square-foot building includes a gym, lockers, showers, a fitness center, a commercial kitchen, two meeting rooms, and a multi-purpose room. Outside of the center, visitors can take advantage of the fenced basketball court, an outdoor fireplace, and a multi-purpose field for events.

Gym has 6,998 square feet of space and includes a basketball court, two volleyball courts, and a pickleball court. League play, open basketball, pickleball and volleyball, camps, clinics, and a walking club will be some of the many activities offered in the gym.
Fitness center consists of a bike, treadmill, elliptical machine, two benches and dumbbells.
Multipurpose room includes 649 square footages of space for meetings, training, classes, and private events with video conferencing technology.
Activity rooms are equipped with video conferencing technology for community meetings, training, classes and other activities.
Named for 'hidden figure'
The center is named in honor of Mary W. Jackson, who became NASA’s first black female engineer and was one of the "hidden figures" who did mathematic computations at the NASA Langley Research Center. She was a resident and active member of the Olde Hampton community. Displays in the center will highlight some of her many contributions.
Unlike with a full-scale community center operated by the city’s Parks and Rec staff, the operations of neighborhood centers are overseen by a board of directors made up of neighborhood stakeholders and city facilitators. Membership is free for everyone; the fitness center membership is $15 a month.
