Volunteer Opportunities
How to become a volunteer:
Obtain and complete a Volunteer Application (PDF)
- Obtain and complete a Waiver and Release of Liability Form for Volunteers (PDF)
- Submit the volunteer application and waiver & release form to the Programs Coordinator by doing one of the following:
- Email HSOprograms@hampton.gov
- Mail to or drop-off: Hampton Sheriff's Office, Programs Office, 1928 W. Pembroke Avenue, Hampton, VA 23661 during office hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays)
Disqualifications for Volunteer Applicants
Criminal Record (to include in-state (VA), out-of-state and federal):
- Murder
- Arson
- Abduction/Kidnapping
- Crimes against children
- Armed Robbery
- Sexual convictions
- Drug convictions within 2 years
- Assault and battery within 5 years
- Use of a firearm within 10 years
Positions
- Alcoholics Anonymous – Men
- Provide male inmates with the support and resources needed in their recovery.
- Alcoholics Anonymous – Women
- Provide female inmates with the support and resources needed in their recovery.
- Narcotics Anonymous – Men
- Provide male inmates with the support and resources needed in their recovery.
- Narcotics Anonymous – Women
- Provide female inmates with the support and resources needed in their recovery.
- Inmate Library Services
- Distribute books to inmates to provide them an opportunity to use their time constructively by accessing education and legal resources, along with materials of encouragement, self-reflection, personal development and religious study.
- Job Readiness Classes & Training
- Assist inmates in areas to include resume writing, interviewing skills, job referrals & placement in an effort for them to become employable upon their release. Experience in teaching some aspect of life skills
- Mentoring
- Assist inmates with goal setting, effective communication skills, critical thinking skills, leadership & problem solving skills. Experience in teaching some aspect of life skills.
- Life Skills Classes
- Present classes to assist in improving inmates' skills in areas such as budgeting, mentoring, self esteem, decision making skills, etc. Qualifications: Experience in teaching some aspect of life skills.
- Reentry Volunteer
- Meet with inmates individually prior to release to provide support as they transition back into the community.
- Support Counseling for Veterans
- Provide support services for a new and better way of life for incarcerated military veterans. Experience in teaching some aspect of life skills.
