Region, development center recognized as top locations for veterans

Nov. 5, 2019 - Hampton Roads, and the Peninsula Workforce Development Center on Butler Farm Road, were recognized this month by the analytical firm College Factual as great locations for veterans in a 2020 college rankings report. According to College Factual, there are an estimated 18,670 veterans in Hampton and about 9,610 students using the GI bill at nearby colleges and universities. College Factual created the ranking to help students identify colleges and universities that will provide them with a high-quality education and a veteran-friendly atmosphere.

Hampton earns spot on list of affordable waterfront communities

Oct. 25, 2019 - Hampton earned a spot on another national list of most affordable waterfront communities. The city was #8 on a list of homes in waterfront cities that “are a total steal,” published by MSN with statistics compiled by GOBankingRates. The MSN list was dominated by cities on lakes and rivers. It noted Hampton’s “numerous” waterways. Three other cities on the East Coast list made the list: Ocean City, MD, at #17; New London, CT, at #7; and Atlantic City, N.J., at #2.

Hampton brewery, distillery win bronze medals

Oct. 8, 2019 - Hampton’s Bull Island Brewing Co. won a bronze medal for best “chili” beer and The Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery won a bronze medal for best “extra special bitter” at the recent Great American Beer Festival in Denver. They were among 13 Virginia breweries to medal at the festival, where more than 300 breweries from across the nation were judged in over 100 styles of beer.

Hampton is named one of the best cities for retirees

Sept. 27, 2019 - Hampton is one of the best cities in the nation for retirees, according to data compiled by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The list was designed "to ensure that you make the most of your golden years and spend them in a place that you love,” according to the announcement. Hampton ranked 93rd on the list. Suffolk was the only other Hampton Roads city to make the list. Other Virginia cities included Roanoke and Lynchburg.

St. George ale named Grand Champion at beer tasting

Aug. 27, 2019 - The St. George Brewery's Golden Ale was named Grand Champion best golden ale or Kolsh in the United States Beer Tasting Championship for the second year in a row. The brewery's Doppelbock was ranked best in the Southeast region as well. Hampton's oldest craft brewery, St. George was founded in 1998. It is located on 204 Challenger Way.

Police, Fire receive $1,200,000 grant

August 2019  - The Hampton Police Division and Fire and Rescue were awarded a $1,200,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency through the FY19 Port Security Grant Program. The grant was awarded for the acquisition of a mobile command vehicle. The vehicle will allow for continuity of government during large-scale emergencies. It will also allow for emergency responses to incidents occurring in and around the Port of Virginia.
