Landfill Bird Population Control Measures

The Solid Waste Division strives to minimize the presence and impact of the landfill whenever possible. The landfill offers a modern and environmentally safe waste disposal facility to the residents of the City of Hampton and surrounding communities.

The landfill has multiple measures in place that limit the impact in the community. Bethel Landfill has partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Wildlife Services to control bird populations because of the landfill’s proximity to Langley Air Force Base. Some of the techniques used by the USDA Wildlife Services Specialists to control and deter bird populations at the site include:

  • Pyrotechnics – A commonly used and effective bird frightening technique. Approved pyrotechnics create a loud sound that deters birds from the area.
  • Propane Cannons – A bird frightening technique that generates a blast that sounds like a gunshot and deters birds from the area.
  • Long-Range Audio Device – The site uses recordings of bird alarm and distress calls to deter birds from the area.

As some birds may become habituated or familiarized with bird frightening techniques, the USDA Wildlife Services Specialists will determine if additional control methods are needed.

Scavenging

In addition to working closely with the USDA, Hampton takes preventive measures to deter bird scavenging at the landfill. At the end of each workday, landfill employees cover the waste with 6 inches of soil or an approved alternative daily cover. The daily cover is intended to prevent animals and birds from accessing the waste, prevent odors, and prevent blown litter.
