Big Bethel Blueway

The Big Bethel Blueway will transform an existing drainage canal into an innovative stormwater storage facility and public green space.

The project will:

  • Reduce flooding by adding 8.38 acre-feet of stormwater storage capacity in the canal
  • Improve community connectivity by creating 6,000 linear feet of publicly accessible walking and biking path
  • Create habitat and improve water quality

The Blueway will begin at the intersection of Big Bethel Road and Albany Drive. From there, it follows the existing canal south past West Mercury Boulevard to just before the canal intersects with Newmarket Creek.

The City has competed engineering designs for the project. The project design team estimates construction to begin late fall 2023. City staff will conduct targeted neighborhood outreach regarding the construction schedule and what adjacent property owners can expect.

This project received funding from the Virginia Community Flood Preparedness Fund Grant Program through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), via CFPF-21-01-21-S.
