Trash and Recycling Collection

Placement of Receptacles

For the safety of City employees and to avoid damage to property, approved refuse and recycling containers shall be placed no more than 3 feet from the street for collection, 10 feet from parked vehicles, not under power lines, and 3 feet from all other objects, with the arrows on the lid facing the street. Please see the municipal code for more information about these requirements.

Bulk Limbs and Bulk Trash

Bulk limbs (limbs and brush no larger than 6 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length) are accepted. Bulk trash includes large items that will not fit into your garbage container, such as furniture, sofas, window-unit air conditioners, appliances, and mattresses. Both bulk limbs and bulk trash are collected on the same day as your regular garbage. Place them curbside as early as 3 p.m. on the day before your scheduled collection day and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day. Leaves and grass should be bagged in clear bags so we can see it’s recyclable. For more information about leaves and grass, visit the frequently asked questions.

What is Allowed to go into the Trash?

The municipal code provides a definition and description for everything from bulk limbs to what can and can’t be recycled. The code also explains the penalty for violations, and provides details on what will and will not be collected.

Please do not mix trash with yard waste. We need yard waste to remain clean in order to recycle these materials.

Household Chemical Collection Program

Hampton’s Household Chemical Collection is a drop-off program sponsored by the City of Hampton and the Virginia Peninsula’s Public Service Authority to help residents with the disposal of household chemicals. Check the schedule and the list of what is accepted. Read some commonly asked questions about this program.

Yard Waste Site

The yard waste site is located on North Park Lane, next to the landfill off of Big Bethel Road. The yard waste site is where residents and contractors doing yard work in Hampton can take their leaves, grass, limbs, and branches for processing into compost and mulch. Please note that dirt cannot be dumped at the yard waste site.

Recycling

Recycling is collected every other week, marked as "blue" and "green" weeks on this calendar. Determine whether you are in a green or blue area by viewing this map.
