Every year since 1985, the first week of May has been set aside as Public Service Recognition Week, a time to thank dedicated public servants from federal, state, and local governments across the country.
In Hampton, city employees were asked to nominate an extraordinary co-worker who exemplifies public service in the city. Here, those nominees tell us why they serve Hampton.
I Serve Because...
Edward Van Es, Jr. - Fire: They (citizens) deserve it. I am a citizen here, my whole family pretty much has lived here through their entirety. The city supported my youth and education and it’s my duty to give it back to them tenfold.
Tiffany Wiggins - Library: I serve because I love fostering a sense of community by making the library relatable to children and teens.
Dominic Thompson - Wastewater Operations: I want to make where I live a little bit better and help out where I can.
Samantha Chong - Marketing & Outreach: I serve because I want to get everyone to love Hampton the way I do, and I want to leave a lasting impact on the area where I grew up, that made me who I am today.
Robin Mccormick - Marketing & Outreach: I want to make sure that people know about all the wonderful things happening in Hampton — festivals, arts, food, and fun. On the more serious side, I try to explain the key issues facing the city and how people can voice their views and get involved.
Patti Peterson - Coliseum Operations: I get to assist a great team, which works hard to provide great entertainment for our citizens. I am fortunate to be a small part of what makes Hampton a great place to live and visit.
RIta Scrivener - Library: Equal access to information, entertainment and community space is vital to a thriving society. It is a great pleasure to serve our citizens in the library each day, and an honor to help plan its next phase.
McCord Newsome - Public Works Engineering: It is very satisfying to know that my efforts help internal and external customers answer their questions or solve their problem. As long as I continue to add value to the organization, I am happy to serve.
Michael Keough - Police: My family has a long history of serving in Hampton and I take pride in continuing that tradition.
Reina Scott - 311 Citizen Contact Center: I serve because of my absolute love for people. To genuinely serve in any capacity is a blessing for me. To know that sometimes you may be that friendly face and or voice that someone needs just to make their day a little brighter is the absolute best.
Lori Green - City Manager's Office: Public service is an honorable and noble profession. I consider it a great privilege to be entrusted to be a servant not only to the Hampton organization but to the community at large. Service is the hallmark of leadership, and we are all called to be leaders. We ARE Hampton!
Kyle Smith - Library: I serve because the city needs examples to show that its citizens are capable of learning and growth.
Nicholas Bonniville - Fire: Fire and EMS has been a large part of my family for multiple generations. It has been instilled in me since I was a little boy that we should take care of each other! I have made it my goal in life to help people in need.
Patricia "Patti" Parker - Risk Management: I serve because I love my city. Hampton is my team and my home.
