School Crossing Guard

Position Details

The Hampton Police Division employs part-time School Crossing Guards to protect and assist students at the 24 schools within the City of Hampton. They perform a multitude of functions to ensure that students arrive safely. In addition, they are given the opportunity to work additional traffic control assignments during City sponsored special events. School Crossing Guards are provided training to include the proper methods of traffic direction.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must have an ability to deal firmly, yet courteously with the public, be alert, be able to carry out complex oral instructions, and possess good observation and memory skills. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to successfully pass a hearing test. Must be able to stand unassisted for a minimum of 2 hours. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Applicants must be of excellent character and reputation, to include no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude. They must pass a City paid polygraph examination, drug analysis test, and successfully complete a Hampton Police Division background check.
