City Manager's Message Oct. 3: Thank you to city staff after flooding close call

Posted on October 3, 2022 at 5:34 PM by Don Mann

Good afternoon,

We have just passed high tide, without much incident. The wind shifted directions earlier today causing the National Weather Service tide projections to steadily drop throughout the day. You will recall we started with a projection of 6.9-7.0 feet above MLLW (the average of the low tides) yesterday. At the 10:30 a.m. call today, the forecast was revised to 6.5 feet which still would have resulted in major flooding. Around 2 p.m., the forecast was once again revised downward to 5.6 feet, a moderate flooding category. Just before 4 p.m., the final forecast was at 5.2 feet, a minor flooding category. With a more than 1.5 feet drop in expected tide, we fared significantly better than originally anticipated. Future tide cycles will continue to decline in impact.

Accordingly, we will have regular operations tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 4.

I want to thank all of our personnel who assisted with storm preparations and sheltering operations today. It is always better to be safe than sorry. We could have just as easily had the wind take a turn for the worse and had much more challenging circumstances. We are all thankful that we were more prepared than necessary and I can once again say with confidence that our team has performed with unparalleled excellence. Thank you for keeping our residents in the forefront of your planning and service delivery!

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable evening!

— Mary
