City Manager's Message Aug. 28: New school year begins

It is hard to believe the summer is nearly over and that many of our children are back to school today (or already, in the case of our collegiate family members)! One of my favorite traditions is that sharing of first day of school pictures. Whether your son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandson, granddaughter or family friend is off for their first day of preschool/kindergarten or their senior year, the taking and sharing of these pictures connects us together as a larger work family. I hope you will share your pictures with me and let me know about your excitement or secret dread that the summer is over. I, for one, have a mix of excitement for my daughter and sadness for me as she enters her freshman year of college (just keeping it real!).

I also hope you will remember — and encourage your family and friends — to be extra careful on our city roads. While safety is always important, it is extra critical when there are young people crossing neighborhood streets and school buses navigating our busy roads. We definitely do not want any accidents involving our family and community members!

I hope all of you — and the students you love (whether yours or another’s) — have a great school year!
