[ARCHIVED] Blackbeard Festival featured on Travel Channel show

Oct. 23, 2015 - Hampton's Blackbeard Festival is featured in the latest episode of the Travel Channel show "Expedition Unknown," which highlights the search for the famous pirate's treasure.

TV show host Josh Gates starts in Hampton and travels down the East Coast and to the Caribbean in search of fun and interesting facts about Blackbeard, a privateer turned pirate. The story is that after he was killed by an expedition sent by the Virginia governor - which included men from Hampton - Blackbeard's head was posted at the mouth of the Hampton River.

If you missed it, the show will be broadcast again on Oct. 24 at 11 a.m., Oct. 28 at 8 p.m., Oct. 29 at 3 a.m. and Nov. 1 at 11 a.m.

Once a year in late Spring, Hampton's Blackbeard Festival draws dozens of re-enactors and thousands of visitors and would-be pirates to the downtown area for two days of re-enactments, food and fun. Earlier this year, USA TODAY named the Blackbeard Festival the third best pirate festival in the nation.
