[ARCHIVED] Hampton police receive "Call of the Year" award at Third Annual EMS Day

June 2, 2016 - Hampton Police received the "Call of the Year Award" May 28 during the Third Annual EMS Day at Busch Gardens. The award was for the department's life-saving response after a Sept. 20, 2015 crash in which a victims leg was severed.

According to police: "On September 20, 2015, at 2:12 a.m., officers responded to a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Coliseum Drive and Convention Center Boulevard. Upon arrival on scene, officers located the victim whose leg was severed just below the hip. An officer immediately applied a tourniquet to the victims upper right leg while an additional officer helped apply pressure to stop the bleeding until they were relieved by medics. Medics advised that the victim had lost a large amount of blood prior to the tourniquet being applied and that without the quick thinking and acting by the officers that the victim would not have survived."

The award was accepted by Ptl. A Komatz, Master Police Officer M. Birdsong, Sgt. R. Gainer, Senior Police C. Frazier, Ptl. A Aronategui and Senior Police Officer R. Franz.
