July 19, 2016 - The Economic Development Authority authorized two grants totaling $419,304 for this fiscal year from a program funded by a hotel tax that supports facilities that attract tourists.
The Boo Williams Sportsplex, which attracts high school athletes to weekend tournaments throughout the year, will receive $219,304. The Virginia Air & Space Center, which is also the visitor's center for both NASA Langley and Langley Air Force Base, will receive $200,000.
The Community Cultural, Athletic and Visitor Attraction Grant Program was established by City Council as part of the budget approved in May 2013. The grants are administered by the Economic Development Authority.
The purpose is to "provide financial assistance to cultural and athletic organizations to be used to improve standards of operation, promote organizational
sustainability and/or increase community awareness and public attendance at athletic or cultural organizations within the City."
