[ARCHIVED] Reminder: Crawlin Crab Half Marathon is Sunday; plan ahead to miss road closures

course map

Sept. 28, 2016 - Hampton's "Crawlin Crab" races are this weekend, and several thousand people will visit the city to run or cheer on runners in a kids 1K, a 5K and a half marathon during the three-day event.

Sunday's half marathon has increased in popularity as it takes runners on a flat, fast scenic course through downtown and along the Chesapeake Bay -- but it also closes several roads and intersections for about an hour and a half on Sunday morning.
Since the closure of the Bridge Street bridge for reconstruction, this year's race adds additional challenges for those in the Little England/Armistead, Crowne Pointe and Merrimac Shores neighborhoods.

Check the race map for approximate closure times and streets when planning travel on Sunday. Police will usher cars across major intersections when there are gaps in the race field, most likely toward the later times listed on the map. (Saturday's shorter race is expected to have a limited impact on travelers, mostly in the area around the convention center.)

And, if you decide to stay in, says tourism director Mary Fugere, consider heading to the course and cheering on the racers as they "Choose Hampton" for fun and fitness.
