Oct. 12, 2016 - Wind, rain and flooding due to Hurricane Matthew caused an estimated $1.868 million in damage in Hampton, according to an early report from city officials.

The list of structures damaged includes almost 30 single-family homes, 18 apartment buildings, two trailer homes, a church and a duplex. Most of the damage was caused by water, followed by trees and then by wind.

Cleanup continues across the region and in Hampton, where city officials are encouraging residents to call 311 (727-8311 from a cell phone) if they have storm damage, even if they have private insurance and have notified their insurance company. City inspectors are still out this week making damage assessments.

Officials said the information about storm damage is provided to the state and is used locally so that they know where similar damage might occur in the future.

Virginia’s Department of Emergency Management has a number of storm-related tips for residents who have flood or renter’s insurance:

• File your insurance claim as soon as possible.
• If you are renter, also contact your landlord to report flooding or structural damage. Landlords are only responsible for the building, not personal belongings.
• Make sure to have your information ready when you call:
o The name of your insurance company.
o Your policy number.
o A telephone number and/or email address where you can be reached.
• You do not need to wait for a presidential (federal) emergency declaration to file a claim. This step is always your first step even if you anticipate applying for federal assistance, should it become available.
• Take photos and make a list of damaged property and items. Include age and value if possible.

Because Virginia was not included in the federal disaster declaration, residents cannot request federal assistance at this time. To get more information about the National Flood Insurance Program, go to www.floodsmart.gov or call 1-800-621-3362.
