[ARCHIVED] tips and reminders for the long 4th of July weekend

If you want to celebrate the 4th at home, remember that all fireworks - except sparklers - are illegal in Hampton, and bringing unapproved fireworks into the city is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

If you want to go out, There are a number of public fireworks displays in Hampton Roads, including:

  • Tonight after the Peninsula Pilots' 7:05 p.m. home game at War Memorial Stadium. Admission to the game is $5, with discounts for children and seniors; active-duty military are free.
  • Tomorrow at Fort Monroe starting at 9:30 p.m., sponsored by the Fort Monroe Foundation. Entrance to the fort will be closed at 9. The fireworks will last about 15 minutes. For more information, go to the Fort Monroe Authority website.
  • Friday at Langley Speedway following racing. Admission is
    $10 for adults, with discounts for children, seniors and military. Racing begins at 7 p.m.
And, if you plan on attending the fireworks at Fort Monroe, the gates close at 9 p.m. and there are a number of road closures leading up to the display 9:30 start. You can get more information from the Hampton police or the Fort Monroe Authority.
