Debbie Blanton of the Hampton Clean City Commission wants to introduce Hampton residents to the remarkable trees that line our streets and parks by offering unique tree tours that take residents throughout the city.

The Clean City Commission has been hosting these tree tours since the early 2000s. “My hope is that people realize the importance of trees,” Blanton said, “Not just the environmental importance but to see how trees create a sense of space.”

The free tours are held in the spring and fall and encourage people to get out and discover their parks and community. People are also encouraged to nominate their favorite trees to include on future tours.

The tours are either walking tours at one location, such as the Spring 2016 tour at Bluebird Gap Farm’s Arboretum, or traveling tours where Clean City Commission volunteers drive participants to various locations.

Blanton provides attendees with a map and brochure that lists the types of trees they will encounter on the tour, often intimate occasions with no more than 10-12 participants. They usually end with light refreshments.

“Imagine Canon Boulevard (in Newport News) without the cherry trees, or Armistead Avenue without those crepe myrtles,” Blanton said. “Trees help you feel the character of a place.”

The upcoming fall tour will be held Saturday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will tour Matteson Trail & Bethel Park and transportation will be provided. Deadline to register is Thursday, Nov. 10. For more information, and to register visit www.hampton.gov/calendar
