Nov. 21, 2016 - Governor Terry McAuliffe announced over the weekend that Hampton - along with Portsmouth and Suffolk - has been added to the federal government’s “Individual Assistance” disaster declaration to help with damages caused by Hurricane Matthew last month.

Individual Assistance programs available through the disaster declaration can provide recovery assistance for individuals and households affected by the storm, including grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-coast loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency had already approved Individual Assistance for Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Newport News. “I am pleased to be able to work with President Obama to bring this funding back for the people of Virginia who need it,” McAuliffe said.

Residents must apply for aid directly with FEMA, and report damages, by:

Starting Monday, Nov. 28, residents can also register in person at a Disaster Recovery Center that will be established at 1304 Big Bethel Road (Fire Station 11) from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. seven days a week.

Hampton had at least 28 single-family homes, 2 mobile homes, 1 non-profit and 18 apartment buildings affected by Matthew, along with power outages, downed trees and other damage. The city reported a total dollar loss of $1.86 million.
