Nov. 23, 2016 - Starting today, representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA,  will begin visiting Hampton residents impacted by Hurricane Matthew to help them register for federal assistance.

Hampton had at least 28 single-family homes, two mobiles homes, one non-profit and nearly 20 apartment buildings that were affected last month by Matthew. More than 50 apartment residents remain in temporary housing.

The governor announced over the weekend that Hampton has been added to the federal government’s “Individual Assistance” disaster declaration, allowing residents to apply for assistance. Using addresses and names provided by the city and other sources, representatives from the Disaster Survivor Assistance program will offer “door-to-door outreach” for displaced residents and others affected by the storm, including the possibility of grants for temporary housing or home repairs, and low-cost loans. The representatives will carry FEMA identification cards.

Hampton residents affected by Matthew who want to register for assistance can also do so in person starting Monday, Nov. 28, at a temporary Disaster Recovery Center that will open at 1304 Big Bethel Road (Fire Station 11).  All residents are asked to have the following information available when they register:

• Social security number (only one needed per household)
• Address of the damaged home or apartment
• Description of the damage
• Information about insurance coverage
• Telephone numbers
• Mailing address
• Bank account and routing number for direct deposit of funds.
