fire patch

Dec. 19, 2016 - In the wake of a recent house fire that was traced to a live Christmas tree, Hampton's Division of Fire and Rescue encourages residents to take some basic precautions this holiday season, especially with live trees. Among their suggestions:
*Choose a tree with fresh, green needles.
*Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source.
*Make sure the tree isn't blocking an exit.
*Water the tree daily.
*Use lights that are UL tested and listed.
*Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
*Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
Officials remind residents that smoke alarms save lives, so make sure your alarms are working properly. For more on the city's smoke alarm program, go to www.hampton.gov/fire.
