[ARCHIVED] Hampton looking to boost seasonal retail, food at Buckroe Beach

beach retail sheds

Dec. 27, 2016 - Pop-up retail sheds, more food trucks, and vendors with carts could be boost the economy and fun this summer at Buckroe Beach.

Hampton's City Council and Economic Development Authority heard presentations in December on ways to take better serve the seasonal needs of beach-goers at the popular bay beach.

A pilot program that could start as soon as this summer would add up to four food truck sites along North First Street. Rental beach sheds would add three slots for retail sales or rental of beach items on the beachfront. The sheds would be temporary and move to other locations in the city after beach season. Another three slots on the Buckroe Pier could be available for pushcart vendors, such as ice cream or popcorn.

The city and EDA plan to issue a request for proposals for vendors interested in the sites. Amy Jordan, redevelopment manager, said the goals are to serve beachgoers and to allow potential retailers to test the market without committing immediately to a permanent space.

Residents have expressed a desire for more food and retail offerings in the Buckroe area. Two restaurants are already located there -- Heavens Pizza and Tap House, 308 Buckroe Ave., and Mili's Steak and Sandwich Co, 1923 N. Mallory St.
