[ARCHIVED] Weather Service issues winter storm watch for the area for Friday and Saturday

snow falling

Jan. 5, 2017 - The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a winter storm watch for the area from 10 p. m. Friday to 10 p.m. Saturday.  According to the city's Emergency Management Office Hampton can expect 4-5 inches of snow to fall late Friday night (after midnight) into Saturday afternoon. Hampton will also see wind gusts of 10-20 mph - and as high as 30 mph - during this time period.

Hampton's Public Works Department, working with police and other departments, has cross-trained more than 200 employees so they can operate different pieces of equipment, including snow plows, salt spreaders, brine units, motor graders, front end loaders and more. Public Works currently has 1400 tons of salt, 15,000 gallons of brine (liquid salt solution) and 5000 gallons of calcium chloride on hand - more than enough for the expected snowfall. Pretreating roads could begin Friday.
