Jan. 8, 2017 - The City of Hampton offices and facilities -- parks, community centers, libraries, arts center, History Museum -- will be closed on Monday, Jan. 9. Courts and schools are also closed. 

Emergency essential personnel should report to work.

Hampton received about a foot of snow on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service's unofficial total, and temperatures have remained well below freezing since. 

City Manager Mary Bunting applauded the job that crews have done in clearing roads and thanked first responders for their work during the storm. However, she noted that melting and re-freezing has created ice on some main streets, and most neighborhood streets remain compacted and slick. 

"Because our employee safety is our top priority, I have decided to close City operations tomorrow to all but emergency essential personnel," Bunting said. "I do expect to open on Tuesday."

Temperatures Sunday night are expected to be in the teens, with Monday's high in the 20s. Residents are reminded to take care - and care for pets - in the cold.  For tips, visit the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s web page.

Trash and recycling pickup for Monday will be collected Wednesday.

The city, working with HELP, has been providing continuous shelter for homeless residents.

Police remained busy over the weekend, with many disabled or stuck cars. Police and Public Works crews noted that many people heeded warnings to stay off the roads this weekend, which helped allow crews room to work.

Hampton City Schools have announced closures for both Monday and Tuesday. Hampton Roads Transit, which suspended service over the weekend, plans to resume with a limited schedule. See gohrt.com for details.

Items scheduled for Monday's Board of Zoning Appeals meeting scheduled for Monday will be heard Feb. 6.

States of emergency were declared in advance of the storm for both the state and the city of Hampton.
