[ARCHIVED] Crews still working to clear main roads; city to open at 10 a.m. Tuesday

snow removal

Jan. 9, 2017 - Road clearing continues, as bitter cold keeps ice forming. The City of Hampton will have a delayed opening at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10; schools and courts remain closed.

Police reported more issues on the roads Monday, as drivers became more accustomed to icy streets and upped their speed, causing problems. Also, a driver hit a snow removal truck. The city asks urges drivers to go very slowly; even roads that look clear may have a thin sheet of ice.

Conditions are improving, particularly Mercury Boulevard. Crews have been working 24 hours a day (in 12-hour shifts) since Friday evening. On Monday, they were plowing, salting, and applying a solution of brine and calcium chloride to help break up the ice -- and then plowing again.

In announcing a delayed opening, City Manager Mary Bunting said, "Our main roads are looking much better, but neighborhood streets remain covered in snow and ice. In addition to extremely low temperatures, today was somewhat overcast meaning the sun did not assist in the melting of these side roads."

Fire officials reported that the bitter cold is causing issues with frozen pipes. Temperatures should be above freezing by noon on Tuesday, which will help conditions.

All solid waste services will be delayed this week. Neighborhood road conditions may continue to cause delays in some places, however; please place containers curbside on the afternoon before your rescheduled service day and leave them until they are emptied.

  • All refuse, recycle and bulk trash collections for Monday, Jan. 9 have been moved to Wednesday, Jan. 11.

  • All collections for Thursday , Jan. 12 have been moved to Friday , January 13.
  • All collections for Friday, Jan. 13 have been moved to Saturday, Jan. 14.
