[ARCHIVED] Resident sought to serve on Planning Commission; reviews land use, zoning

May 15, 2017 - City Council is looking for potential candidates to fill a vacancy on the city’s Planning Commission, the board that reviews the city’s long-range plans, as well as land use and zoning.

The commission, which generally meets on the third Thursday of each month at 3:30, prepares the city’s comprehensive plan and reviews applications submitted for changes to zoning districts, conditional use permits, and other land use and zoning matters.

Recommended qualifications for the commission members include:

Demonstrated involvement in the community
Graduate of Hampton 101 or other city academy
Previous service on another board or commission
Expertise/professional background in one of the following areas desired: Land use law; environmental sciences; transportation; engineering; real estate/development/housing; finance & banking; facilities planning/management; geography; forecasting, modeling and demographics; or social sciences such as youth and family development.

To apply, submit an application to the city’s Board Bank by Monday, May 22.

Several other boards and commissions also have vacancies coming open this summer, including: Athletic Hall of Fame, Board of Review of Real Estate Assessments, Building Code Board of Appeals, Citizens’ Unity Commission, Grievance Board, H2O Community Development Authority, Hampton-Newport News Community Service Board, Hampton Redevelopment & Housing Authority, Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities, Peninsula Airport Commission, Thomas Nelson Community College Board of Trustees, Virginia Air & Space Center Board, Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program Advisory Board.
