[ARCHIVED] Fallen and current officers honored during National Police Memorial Week

May 16, 2017 - In honor of National Police Memorial Week, Hampton Police held a dual ceremony Monday recognizing fallen law enforcement officers and those who have distinguished themselves in current service to the community.

The ceremony was at 10 a.m. in Honor Park, between City Hall and the P.G. Minetti Public Safety Building. Mayor Donnie Tuck read a proclamation honoring police, and chief Terry Sult gave seven lifesaving awards, 13 meritorious service awards, three medals of Valor, a volunteer of the year award and two P.G. Minetti Excellence in Leadership Awards. Police honored fallen officers Kenneth E. Wallace, Mark C. DeCuypere and Ralph Ghivizanni.

During the ceremony Sult spoke about the challenges facing police today, including the need to deal with serious social issues as well as crime and violence. And in a city proclamation the mayor spoke about honoring the work and sacrifice of the police.
