July 28, 2017 - First, City Council moved its summer meetings to Jones Magnet Middle School while the council chambers at City Hall undergoes renovations, including new seats and screens for visitors. Now, a broken air conditioner at Jones will cause Council (and the School Board) to move to Kecoughtan High School's auditorium in August.

The full City Council meeting agenda for Aug. 9 is still being assembled, but it will include eight public hearings that already have been scheduled. Those wishing to speak at any of these public hearings should sign up in the lobby of the Kecoughtan auditorium; sign-in sheets will be available at 6 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. meeting. Public hearings scheduled for Aug. 9 are:

  • A rezoning application by Marlyn Development Corp. and AH&H Corp. to rezone 16.48+ acres at 1300 N. Mallory Street  (former Shelton nursing home site) for up to  41 single-family homes.
  • Three rezoning applications by the city to limit the future development uses of 16 properties outside Langley Air Force Base to those compatible in the flight approach.
  • A use permit by First United Church of Christ to permit a Commercial Day Care 2 for approximately 50 children at 1017 Todds Lane, which is on the north side of Todds Lane, west of Big Bethel Road and just south of the campus of Liberty Baptist Church
  • A zoning ordinance amendment that would update requirements for screening and location of accessory structures and equipment in the Phoebus Districts.
  • Two  zoning ordinance amendments affecting the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Overlay District that would create new “special green area” requirements, authorize administrative review of permitted encroachments into the Resource Protection Area buffer, and transfer responsibility for review of exception requests from the existing Chesapeake Bay Review Committee to the Board of Zoning Appeals.

The full City Council agenda will be published Aug. 4 and include additional items. The Council's Aug. 9 work session, which will begin early at 10 a.m. instead of 1 p.m., will take place at City Hall in the Community Development Conference Room on the 5th floor. All meetings are open to the public.

Kecoughtan High School is located at 522 Woodland Rd.
