[ARCHIVED] Total eclipse tips and view safely at Hampton library, Virginia Air & Space Center

Aug. 21, 2017 - Happy Total Eclipse Day! The eclipse buzz hasn't escaped us and while it is exciting to be experiencing the first total eclipse in the continental United States in almost 40 years, we want to remind you to view safely.

NASA recommends that anyone viewing through solar viewing glasses makes sure that the glasses are certified ISO 12312-2 and that the glasses have the manufacturers name and address printed on them. Do not use glasses if they are more than three years old, have scratched or wrinkled lenses. NASA also recommends viewers not use homemade filters or the use of ordinary sunglasses; even the darkest pair should not be used as replacements.

Other safety tips include:

  • Supervise children using solar filters
  • Cover eyes and remove solar filters while looking away from sun
  • Do not use unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars or other optical devices
  • If you normally wear glasses, keep them on, put your solar eclipse glasses over them
