Sept. 8, 2017 - Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency Friday in anticipation of the possible impact of Hurricane Irma. The order allows the state to mobilize resources, including the Virginia National Guard, and to pre-position people and equipment to help respond to the storm. City officials, meanwhile, continue to monitor Irma's path as it moves towards Florida and other states.  

The city manager, emergency management director, police, fire and other staff are meeting regularly to make sure staff and equipment will be in place when Irma arrives. Although the path of the hurricane is still subject to change, the latest forecasts call for the worst weather to be to the south and west of Hampton Roads. Gusty winds, flooding and rain are expected locally.

Residents are encouraged to develop a disaster plan and to prepare family emergency kits. Residents are also encouraged to learn more about the state's new hurricane evacuation program and coastal evacuation zones by going to www.knowyourzoneva.org. The new program was unveiled by the governor earlier this year at Fort Monroe.
