Sept. 14, 2017 - More than 50 people - including Mayor Donnie Tuck and City Manager Mary Bunting - were on hand Thursday morning at  the official groundbreaking for the new Hyatt Place Hotel at 1906 Coliseum Drive.

Before taking golden shovels in hand, Tuck, Bunting and Akhil Jain, president of Landmark Hotel Group, talked about the importance of the hotel to future development and tourism in the city.

Both Tuck and Bunting spoke about the need for quality hotel rooms in the city, a project that has been embraced by City Council since at least 2015. The goal is to increase the number of people who choose to spend time in Hampton while on vacation or attending events in the city by improving the number of quality hotel rooms in Hampton.

Jain said Thursday that the project would not have happened without the help of various city officials and staff, including the Economic Development Authority and Economic Development Office.

The new hotel is expected to open in about 14 months. Located across from the Coliseum and Hampton Roads Convention Center, the hotel will have just over 100 rooms and a large meeting/conference facility. It is expected to cost more than $11 million, including some performance incentives provided by the city.

Headquartered in Virginia Beach, Landmark Hotel Group operates 13 hotels in the region with nearly 14,000 rooms.
