[ARCHIVED] Waterworks to take down Fox Hill and Phoebus water storage tanks

under-construction3

Dec. 8, 2017 – The views are about to change in the Fox Hill and Phoebus areas. The Waterworks Department, owned by the City of Newport News, will begin demolishing the out-of-service water storage tanks located there beginning this winter.

Sometimes it’s hard to say ‘good-bye’ but the nearly 100-year-old structures no longer serve a purpose. Waterworks said the Phoebus tank has been out of service since 2014 and the Fox Hill tank has been out of service for six months. Upon removal, water pressure monitoring stations will be installed.

The structures’ demolition was approved by the Virginia Department of Health and many steps have been taken before actual removal. Through the years, Waterworks has done significant engineering analysis that resulted in the installation of larger water pipelines that increase water capacity, flow, pressure and enhanced fire flow protection. These improvements occurred without any uninterrupted service.

So alas, large water storage tanks, we bid you adieu and thank you for serving Hampton residents for many years. Together, we will welcome a much cleaner view.
