[ARCHIVED] Winter shelter program is available for the homeless as cold sweeps area

Dec. 28, 2017 - A Night's Welcome, the winter shelter program provided by Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodging and Provisions, or H.E.L.P., is up and running to help keep the homeless in Hampton out of the cold.

As part of A Night's Welcome, area congregations rotate hospitality and provide the homeless with shelter, dinner and breakfast meals during the cold winter months. The host site this week - until Dec. 30 - is Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, 2200 Coliseum Drive. From Dec. 30-Jan. 6, 2018, the host will be St. Marks United Methodist Church at 99 East Mercury Blvd. Doors open at 6 p.m. and close at 7 a.m. the next morning. Each guest will have a case management intake sheet completed and will be evaluated for additional services.

Anyone seeking immediate shelter should call the Housing Crisis Hotline at 757-587-4202 or 1-866-750-4431. H.E.L.P., which works closely with the city and city officials, also has a food pantry, family shelter and transitional housing.
