[ARCHIVED] Hampton offices open Monday; trash collection resumes Tuesday

Jan. 7, 2017 - Hampton city offices and facilities will open as usual on Monday now that main roads are cleared, said City Manager Mary Bunting. However, icy neighborhood roads will keep schools closed and delay trash collections for one more day.

"I am pleased to report that the main roads are in very good shape," said Bunting in an email to employees. ?They have also cleared city facility parking lots so that employees may safely return to work."

Trash collection will resume as close to regular collection as possible, with the exception of Monday. Monday's trash will be picked up Tuesday; Tuesday's trash on Wednesday; and Thursday and Friday as normal. However, there may be some areas that trash collectors can't get to, or times that they are delayed past daylight and have to suspend for the day. If your trash is not collected on the schedule day, please leave it at the curb until it gets picked up.

Public Works officials considered trying to make up the missed collections from last week but decided it would be more practical to get to everyone this week, in roughly the normal routine, with the exception of Monday. Recycling crews will pick up both this week's and last week's Thursday and Friday routes. They will use Saturday if necessary.

The trash trucks can't safely navigate the icy streets, and many residents would have a hard time digging out their mobile toters and getting them to the curb on Monday. Monday's temperatures are expected to be in the 40s and should melt much of the remaining snow.

Hampton -- as well as other cities in the region -- is not able to clear neighborhood streets. However, many people have been venturing out this weekend as businesses reopened.

City employees may use liberal leave on Monday if their supervisors approve.
