Jan. 16, 2018 - Hampton's Public Works Department began pretreating roads Tuesday morning in preparation for the winter storm that's expected to hit the region early Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said Hampton Roads could get 1-3 inches of snow. Public Works will continue treating city roads with a brine solution until the snow begins falling. Snow crews are scheduled to start work early Wednesday and begin working 12-hour shifts until the end of the snowfall and cleanup. Public Works says some 600 tons of salt is on hand, with more on the way, and snow and ice removal equipment has been checked.

Along with travel on roadways, the weather's biggest impact may be on refuse and recycling collection. Because Monday was a holiday, Monday trash collection will take place Wednesday, when the storm is expected to be at its worst.

Hampton's Office of Emergency Management, Public Works, police, firefighters and others continue to monitor the storm closely.
