Jan. 31, 2018 - Healthy Families' School Age Programs has received $13,401 this school year in grants and "in-kind" donations that support a variety of enrichment programs. Money from Hampton Grows, the Virginia Aquarium, Dr. Linda Hayden of Elizabeth City State University and the Girl Scout Colonial Coast Council has allowed students to study physics, astronomy and aviation at NASA's 100th anniversary event, and reptiles and amphibians at the Aquarium.

Other benefits:

  • The literacy programs at Bassette Elementary School received 100 books from Hampton University's "Lick Literacy" program.
  • Physical fitness and health programs expanded their experiences for students to include non-league sports thanks to equipment from Good Sports and Net Generation.
  • The creative arts program received 25 student scholarships from Beauty for Ashes Contemporary Dance School. Each scholarship student participated in contemporary dance classes and allowed students to participate in field trips to see other professional dance companies.

Healthy Families' goal is to fully fund after-school enrichment programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, creative arts, and physical fitness.
