May 2, 2018 — A phishing email was recently delivered to a large number of city employees' Hampton email addresses and should be deleted without being opened, the IT Department warns.

Anyone who did click on the link in the email and entered information should contact the IT Helpdesk immediately by emailing ithelp@hampton.gov or calling 757-727-6486. IT will help reset passwords and scan devices for malicious software.

Phishing emails are attempts to gather sensitive information, such as passwords or credit card information, and sometimes install malicious software on recipients' devices by tricking them into clicking on links within the email. They are usually sent to a wide audience.

Refer to the document How to Spot a Phishing Scam that shows common techniques to identify phishing emails.
