[ARCHIVED] Weather service issues heat advisory, residents encouraged to stay cool, stay safe

June 19, 2018 - The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a heat advisory for today and temperatures in Hampton will be 95 degrees with heat index values as high as 105 degrees.

Hampton's Emergency Management Office said the combination of high temperatures and high humidity is expected to create a situation where heat illnesses are possible. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned areas, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly. City community centers and libraries are open and water will be available there for residents who need to get out of the heat.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Emergency Management also reminds us that heat stroke is an emergency that warrants calling 911.
