July 27, 2018 - The Air Force will conduct aerial mosquito spraying over Langley Air Force Base and Craney Island on the night of July 31. In the event of inclement weather, the spraying will move to Aug. 1.

The Air Force uses specially modified C-130s with global positioning to make sure that the spraying occurs only over designated areas. Still, officials recommend that bee keepers adjacent to these areas cover their hives in the evening to help prevent any loss of bees.

The spray mission will begin after sunset to minimize impact to insects such as bees and to decrease exposure to personnel. According to James Watson, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron pest management supervisor, the insecticide being used is safe for humans and pets, but those with allergies or respiratory concerns should remain indoors during aerial spraying operations. It is also recommended that small children remain indoors as their respiratory systems are not fully developed and are more susceptible to irritation. The unit will apply 90 gallons of Dibrom Concentrate at a rate of less than 1 ounce per acre. 

A second application is scheduled for Aug. 27-30.

Hampton's entomologists say that the volume of mosquitoes in the city is relatively low at the current time, judging by the number caught in traps, the number carrying diseases, and calls for service to the 311 call center. 

However, recent rains have created likely breeding conditions. Residents are reminded to dump containers any standing water to help eliminate the Asian tiger mosquito habitat, to wear repellent and call 311 (727-8311 from a cell) if any localized nuisance mosquito issues are detected.
