[ARCHIVED] Help 'Catch the King' and join a regional effort to measure astronomical tide

Oct. 5, 2018 - Your help is needed to "Catch the King" on Oct. 27.

For the second year in a row, hundreds of volunteers from across the region are wanted to monitor and measure the years highest astronomical tide - the king tide.

Smartphone measurements taken by volunteers help improve a tidal flooding model forecast that's being developed at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Last year’s Catch the King event is believed to have been the world’s largest-ever king tide crowdsourcing effort. Organizers are aiming for an even larger turnout this year as the region continues to plan for and study rising sea levels.

In Hampton, flood depth monitoring gauges have been installed near well-known locations, including the Barking Dog restaurant, Air Power Park, Buckroe Beach, Grandview Nature Preserve, Gosnold's Hope Park and downtown near the Miss Hampton. The gauges have scannable QR codes that are linked to online forms where volunteers can record water level, tide conditions and more.

Learn more about the project, and how you can take part, at www.whro.org/kingtide, or visit http://bit.ly/catchtheking.

Catch the King is supported by a number of local and state organizations, including tHRive, the young professionals of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, the Hampton Roads Sanitation District, and the City of Hampton.
