Community party will welcome new dock to Phoebus on Saturday, March 23

March 1, 2019 - Partnership for a New Phoebus and the City of Hampton will have a dock party and sock burning on Saturday, March 23, from noon-5 p.m., to christen the new floating dock for dinghies. There will be live entertainment, children’s activities, seafood and more.

The dock at the end of Mellen Street was built by the city and is designed for use by both visitors and local residents. The goal is to welcome boaters visiting Hampton or traveling the Intracoastal Waterway to anchor in deeper water, use their dinghies to travel under the Mugler Bridge and tie up at the dock to visit the restaurants and other businesses in Phoebus. In addition, it can serve as a launch point for residents who own small watercraft, such as kayaks and canoes. It will also be a scenic viewpoint.

The event includes a sock-burning ceremony — a boating tradition that marks the return of Spring. Attendees are invited to bring an old pair of socks to burn, as well as a pair of new socks to donate to the Salvation Army. The ribbon-cutting and sock-burning will be followed by a community festival.
