May 6, 2019 - Hampton City Schools said Superintendent Jeffery O. Smith was named the 2020 Virginia Superintendent of the Year Monday at the Virginia Association of School Superintendents spring conference in Roanoke. Smith was selected by the state superintendent of public instruction, a member of the state board of education, and a number of other state education leaders.

“I am humbled and honored to be the recipient of the 2020 Virginia Superintendent of the Year award,” said Smith. “This recognition is representative of our collective work as a school division. It represents the commitment to ‘academic excellence for every child, every day, whatever it takes.’ It remains an honor to serve our community.”

School Board Chair Ann Cherry said: “It is no surprise that Dr. Jeffery Smith is being recognized for such a prestigious honor. Our division’s accomplishments under his leadership for the past four years is a clear indicator of his passion as an educator and commitment to the students and staff of Hampton City Schools.”

As Virginia's Superintendent of the Year, Smith is eligible for the National Superintendent of the Year Award, which will be presented next February at the 2020 National Conference on Education in San Diego, CA by the American Association of School Administrators.
