June 3, 2019 - The Hampton City Hall and Coliseum are lit in blue this week as the Hampton community joins our region in expressing our care and concern for the Virginia Beach victims and survivors of Friday’s deadly shooting. City employees also wore blue Monday and took group pictures to share with their Virginia Beach peers. In asking employees to wear blue Monday, City Manager Mary Bunting noted,  “There is little we can do to provide comfort to the pain of those who lost family, friends and colleagues, but we can visibly show our care and concern by wearing blue during this day of solidarity.”
On Friday evening, after learning of the tragic incident, Bunting told employees:  “Our hearts ache for our public service peers. We are one united family of public servants who care deeply about our communities and each other. I have already extended the Hampton team’s support to Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen. We stand ready to help in any way possible. While our pain cannot compare to those who lost family, friends or co-workers today, it is nonetheless real. All violence is horrible, but today’s events hit especially close to home.”
Also over the weekend, Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck said: "To Mayor Dyer and the City of Virginia Beach - this past Thursday, the City of Hampton team and others representing our region's localities gathered in your City to discuss our shared economic future. Today, on behalf of the City of Hampton, I want to extend our condolences and express our shared sense of loss regarding yesterday's tragic event. The difference in those two days is indeed a reminder that "time is filled with swift transitions." Keeping you and your city in prayer.”
