[ARCHIVED] Improvements under way for Grandview Beach nature trail; will be closed on weekdays

Grandview Nature Preserve

June 21, 2019 -- The nature trail access to Grandview Beach Nature Preserve is getting a facelift, but the work will close the trail weekdays until mid-July. The access will remain open on Saturdays, Sundays and the long Fourth of July weekend (July 4-7).

The trail is being resurfaced, and the gravel needs to be restored in several places. Also, Parks, Recreation and Leisure staff will be cutting back the overgrowth to make the walk to the beach preserve easier.

In addition, benches and bike racks will be installed at the entrance to the beach access.

The half-mile nature trail leads to a 2.5 mile stretch of natural Chesapeake Bay beach. In total, the nature preserve covers more than 475 acres of salt marsh, tidal creeks, and beachfront and is home to the largest colony of least terns on the Atlantic Coast. Black skimmer, American oystercatcher and other shorebirds also frequent the beach.

Only the access trail will be closed, not the beach; nearby residents with other access routes and boaters can still visit.
