June 27, 2019 - The Blackbeard Festival is over, but Blackbeard's Crew and the Downtown Hampton Public Piers will welcome the Tall Ship Providence at 4 p.m. Thursday after it docks downtown. A replica of the sloop that was captained by John Paul Jones in 1776, the Providence will be open for tours Friday, June 28, from 10-5 p.m. Tours will begin at the Hampton Maritime Center, 710 Settlers Landing Road, and are free and open to the public. The current Tall Ship Providence was completed in 1976 in Rhode Island. For most of its history, the ship has participated in tall ship events and was even seen in some of the films from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. In 2017, Providence was purchased by the Tall Ship Providence Foundation to become the centerpiece of a new maritime museum experience in Alexandria, Va. For more information contact Hampton Public Piers at 757-727-1276 or email dockmaster@downtownhampton.com.
