Sept. 27, 2019 - Hampton is one of the best cities in the nation for retirees, according to data compiled by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The list was designed "to ensure that you make the most of your golden years and spend them in a place that you love,” according to the announcement.

The data used to determine the top cities was:

  • Percentage of the population above the age of 65
  • Percentage of retirees in the 65+ population
  • Overall poverty rate
  • Percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Median monthly housing costs
  • Physicians per 100K population
  • Violent crime per 100K population
  • Police officers per 100K population

Hampton ranked 93rd on the list. Suffolk was the only other Hampton Roads city to make the list. Other Virginia cities included Roanoke and Lynchburg. Virginia was more highly rated than its neighbors: Only four cities made the list from North Carolina, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, Kentucky and Washington, D.C. combined. And although many people think of Florida as a top retiree destination, it did not dominate the list. Massachusetts, for example, had 12 cities on the list — and 9 cities in the top 25.  The data ranked all U.S. cities with a population of 10,000 or higher.
